When they finally did marry, their wedding like their marriage to come was a high-profile affair.

And to his credit, he owned up to his past misdeeds.

“But I now recognize that I have offended people.

None of this was a deal-breaker for Shriver, who quickly came to her husband’s defense.

But over time, their unified front started to crack.

Regretful as he was, his apology was too little, too late for Shriver.

The pair soon separated, and Shriver filed for divorce.

“Fatherhood is really the greatest joy,” Schwarzenegger toldMen’s Health(viaParade).

“Watching all five of my kids grow into their own successful lives is fantastic.

And according to Parade, their now-grown children are thriving in their chosen careers.

Their reasons for staying in relationship limbo for so long may have been more than sentimental, however.

A mutual acquaintance of the pair shared some plausible theories with theNew York Post.

“you could get things done quietly when people are busy celebrating the holidays,” the acquaintance said.

And the strongest bond remaining between them is their dedication to their children.
